The Elementary School of ISK comprises Pre-Kindergarten (4 year olds) to Grade 5 (10 year olds). We have two classes at each grade level with the exception of Pre-Kindergarten, where we have one class only. All ES classrooms are located in circular pods (Grades 1 to 5) or in their own little houses (Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten). Our teaching staff is well qualified, very experienced and diverse. Most ES classes have a full-time, qualified assistant.
Our school year is divided into two semesters and each semester has two quarters. Progress reports are issued at the end of each quarter. The school year has approximately 180 instructional days. Our school day begins at 8:30 (Grades 3 to 5) or 8:45 (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 2), and all students complete their academic day at 3:20. The ISK calendar runs from approximately August 12 to the end of the first week in June.
The ISK ES curriculum is North American based with a strong component of Kenyan studies at each level. The children have classes in Art, Computer, Physical Education (including swimming), Music and Library to complement the core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Children learn Kiswahili in Kindergarten to Grade 3 and choose between French or Spanish for Grades 4 and 5.
The ES has an After School Activities (ASA) program, running from Monday through Thursday for seven weeks of each nine-week quarter, from 3:45 to 4:45. This is for children from Grades 1 to 5. The ASAs include such activities as various sports, crafts, academic support, writing books, dance, fitness, etc.
Additional features of our Elementary School are:

- Peer Helpers program
- Extensive IT integration (ES Virtual Library)
- overnight intercultural trips (Grades 3, 4 and 5)
- local field trips (all grades)
- extensive Student Support Services (SSS) program: English as a Second Language, Speech/Language, Learning Resource Center)
- full-time Guidance Counselor designated for ES only
- regular student performance assemblies
- music concerts
- ES art showings
In the ISK ES, we strive to provide a warm, caring and engaging environment. Our academic standards are high, yet realistic, and parents are invited to be full partners in our daily school life. We have a consistent and persistent theme of actively encouraging the children to become contributors to the world, rather than consumers.
