Middle School students at ISK generally represent a couple of dozen nationalities. Their parents are in the worlds of business, the diplomatic corps, the United Nations or NGO's. Because there is quite a bit of transition in and out of school the kids tend to be very welcoming of each other. Typically, students find friends very quickly which we know is so very important when changing schools.
Middle School includes grades 6, 7, and 8. The students range in age from 10 to 13 years. Approximately 130 students attend the middle school with around 45 students per grade level. Core subject class size is relatively small, between 15 and 18 students. Most middle school teachers received their training in North America and/or have experience working in other international schools. The normal school day runs from 8:30am to 3:20pm. A late bus is available for students who wish to remain on campus for after-school activities.
The academic schedule follows a block system. Each day contains four 80-minute classes. Each class meets every other day. The school year is divided into four 9-week quarters. Lockers are issued to students for their books and belongings.
We believe that strong links between parents and the school are essential for student success. Parents are always welcome on campus and are encouraged to initiate contact when questions or concerns arise. Each Friday, a Middle School newsletter is sent home with the students. It highlights up-coming MS events and lists academic due dates. On Thursdays, an ISK newsletter is published, covering K-12 activities and general announcements. Formal report cards go out at the end of each quarter and are followed by parent-teacher conferences at the end of the first and third quarters of the year.
