Admissions Overview

Overview

ISK serves a diverse community of learners with a range of educational backgrounds, languages, talents and abilities. The school supports a managed number of students representing a range of learning differences from moderate learning challenges to the highly able based on the school's enrollment and resources. ISK promotes an optimal outcome for every student to achieve the
Mission, Vision and Educational Aims.

When and How to Apply

We are delighted that you are considering ISK for your child’s education and we look forward to working with you in close partnership. We recognize that choosing the right school for your child is a decision that goes beyond the world-class reputation or local appeal that ISK enjoys.

The goal of the admissions process is to ease your child’s entry into ISK at the appropriate stage between Pre-Kindergarten and Grade 12 and to welcome your whole family into the ISK community.

We accept students throughout the year and strongly encourage parents to apply as early as possible. Please note that in order to speed up the decision of acceptance, it is important to submit all the required documents. An application review will only begin after a complete application is submitted. The student must also complete our school's assessment prior to a confirmed acceptance.

Our academic school year runs from early August through early June; the first semester ends mid-December and the second semester commences in early January.

When you are ready to apply for admission see our Admissions Procedures.

Philosophy

We accept students who can be successful in the daily academic program, provided there is space available in the grade. In addition, we offer appropriate student-centered instruction for students with identified mild to moderate learning needs through our Student Support Services. We do not currently have a program for students who require support for severe learning needs.

Admission to ISK is non-discriminatory and open to all students without regard to race, sex, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation or national or ethnic origin. We invite applications from students who can benefit from an international, university preparatory English language education.

We use a North American grade and/or age placement scale for class admission. In cases where students come from a school using a different grade level system, students will be placed according to ISK's grade system. The same is true for age placement. For Pre-Kindergarten, the student needs to have turned four years old by September 15 to be accepted.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program is a two-year program commencing in grade 11. We can only accept IB Diploma students into grade 12 provided they are coming from another IB school and can continue with their particular subject choices.

If a student's admission to ISK is not possible, it is most likely due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Class size has reached capacity
  • Student has severe learning needs which ISK can not accommodate
  • The managed number of mild or moderate Learning Support students in the grade applied for is at its maximum
  • Student has a history of discipline, drug or alcohol problems
  • Other reasons which may be in the best interest of the school and the student as determined by the Principal or Director of ISK

If spaces are limited in a particular grade, applicants who have met all admission requirements shall be admitted according to the following priorities:

  • Children of employees, grantees or contractors of the United States government and the Canadian government receiving an educational allowance
  • Children of teaching and administrative staff at ISK
  • Children who have siblings in the school
  • Recipients of competitive ISK scholarships
  • Children of the international community not permanently residing in Kenya, with previous international or North American education experience
  • All other students with appropriate academic background
