At the International School of Kenya, sustainability is not a standalone initiative—it is a shared way of learning, leading, and living. Across the school, students, staff, and families actively contribute to building a more sustainable campus and a more responsible global community. A strong culture of student voice drives this work forward, with learners leading real change through environmental action, innovation, and advocacy.
Carbon Awareness & Climate Action
ISK continues to strengthen its approach to understanding and reducing its environmental footprint.
Students and staff are collaborating on tools and systems to support ongoing carbon tracking, helping the school move toward long-term sustainability goals, including its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030.
This work connects classrooms, operations, and external partners to ensure climate action is practical, measurable, and continuously improving.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Sustainability at ISK extends into immersive learning experiences and community partnerships.
Students engage in environmental field experiences and service programs that explore:
- Coastal conservation and mangrove restoration
- Wildlife protection and ecosystem preservation
- Community-based recycling and upcycling projects
- Reforestation and habitat restoration initiatives
These experiences connect classroom learning with real-world environmental action.
Earth Day & Community Action
Earth Day at ISK has grown into a whole-school celebration of environmental action, bringing together students, staff, and external partners for hands-on learning and service.
Activities have included:
- Recycling innovation workshops
- Tree planting and food forest development
- Sustainable product design and creation
- Campus clean-ups and environmental restoration
- Conservation education and community engagement
Each year, Earth Day reinforces ISK’s shared commitment to protecting the environment through action, creativity, and collaboration.
The Blanchard Community Garden
The Blanchard Community Forest was designed in the Fall of 2021 by high school students in the Environmental Science course immediately following the construction of the new Middle School and HS Science facilities. The area below the lower parking lot was severely impacted during construction, although most of the larger trees were protected. In November and December of 2021, students from the ES, MS, and HS joined forces to plant over 250 indigenous trees (15 different species) and 125 indigenous shrubs (16 different species) around the many paths and outdoor classroom areas that were created for use in outdoor learning and environmental education. Students in the high school Environmental Science classes have continued to plan for, design, fundraise for, and help with the construction of many new additions to the forest ecosystem, including a stream ecosystem (built in 2023) and a pond ecosystem (currently under construction).
