Plastiki Rafiki: Turning trash into treasure with a sheet press
Plastiki Rafiki and Construction by Design, two HS student-led clubs at ISK, have teamed up to design and fabricate a sheet press for plastic recycling. This is now our sixth plastic recycling machine design built in the lab, showcasing why ISK is an innovative International School in Kenya.
Following open-source schematics, students, with the help of ISK staff, have built a machine capable of producing 1.2m x 1.2m sheets made from recycled plastic. This machine, together with a plastic injector, were commissioned by the International School of Tanganyika (IST), which is starting its own student recycling club modeled after Plastiki Rafiki.
Now that we have successfully built one sheet press, we look forward to building our own machine as well as collaborating with IST students and sharing our plastic recycling know-how and innovative product designs from the last five years. At ISK, innovation goes beyond education.
